Area Damage Function and UtilityArea Damage Maximum Item ValuesReferencesThis property was not very useful when first tested during the Reaper of Souls Beta test, since critical hit damage was not included. At that point the AD only procedfrom the base damage, which made it inadequate. This changed during testing, and when the modifier went live in D3v2 and in RoSit included critical hit damage. Thus a character with 50% Area Damage who dealt 1,0…

Area damage works off of all skills that hit a target. If you have 100% area damage (possible with 50 paragon levels and items) and you crit something for lets say 3 million then you have 20% chance to deal 3 million damage to all enemies around that target.

Area Damage procs 20% of the time, every time an enemy takes damage as long as the damage is not from a proc (ie, if you do the damage, not your items). It deals a percentage of that damage (the AD you have on your gear) to every other nearby enemy, up to a maximum possible of 194%.

On average, you’ll roll 2 area damage procs, each of which will deal 100% of your original damage, for a total of +200% damage. Area damage has Tripled your overall single-target damage. But it gets even better the more enemies are nearby. Imagine you hit 30 enemies this time, Not only are you doing more damage from hitting more enemies, but you’re getting more area damage …

Per example, let’s say there are 3 monsters close to each other. You have +50% area damage. You use an AoE skill that hits all three of them for 1’000’000 damage. For all 3, there is a 20% chance each that the other two monster get an additional 500’000 damage.

… 4.6 How does Area Damage work? This is a complex mechanic in game where every attack that is able to proc Area Damage will have a 20% chance to apply a portion of the final damage (after all multipliers) to monsters within range.

The developer cannot fix the area damage lag problem. The problem is caused by the game design reason, which is very fundamental. No hope!

There are many mechanics in the game where Blizzard has not been clear whatsoever on how the mechanic works. I personally prefer to keep the shoulders with dex/vit/AR and CDR and have IAS on the dagger – yes, it can, and does do less damage than AD (when AD triggers of course), but remember, AD only has a 20% chance of triggering.

Area Damage, AD, (originally called “Splash Damage”) is a 20% chance of all attacks dealing X% damage to other enemies within 10 yards. It’s basically free damage dealt to other nearby targets, and it can add up to considerable damage, since it procs from every target.
