Answer (1 of 2): The first and easiest answer would be the difficulty you have most fun at, whether that’s slaughtering hordes with one-shot abilities or hanging on by the skin of your teeth trying to survive.

There are other answers below:

Nephalem rifts are great for seeing what you can survive, while greater rifts are great for what you can clear efficiently. With greater rifts being Diablo 3’s endgame, the answer to my question is “play whatever greater rift difficulty you can while completing it in under 15 minutes.” Note: if you run bounties, run either Torment I or Torment VII.

What difficulty should I play on Diablo 3? Playing seasonal, start out normal or hard. Run bounties and Nephalem rifts to level. Bump difficulty as you are capable, but prioritize speed over difficulty. 3x experience is no good if it takes you 4x longer to complete a bounty/rift.

Originally, Diablo 3 had Normal, Nightmare, Hell and Inferno difficulties, but players generally felt like it was too difficult to fine tune the difficulty and it felt either too easy or too difficult once you’d jumped a difficulty level.

When you start up a game of Diablo III, you’ll be able to select the difficulty level you’d like to play on. By default, Normal, Hard, and Expert are available. You’ll unlock Master difficulty when any of your characters completes the game, and Torment …

Another pre-game choice is setting your difficulty, and the widely accepted leveling difficulty is Hard: a good combination of negligible challenge and a decent 75% experience bonus. You can consider bumping the difficulty to Master or higher only if you have received a huge power spike, such as crafting a reduced level requirement weapon (discussed below).

In order to unlock Master difficulty, you must at least complete Act IV on one character, while Torment 1 requires you to reach level 60. At level 60 you can play Torment I through VI, while Torment VII and above require you to have already reached level 70 to unlock them.

· 3y It does not get harder on normal. Monsters scale with your level + selected difficulty and normal could just as well be called “very easy”. Even on Expert you will probably not die. It only gets harder when you can select master+ difficulties with level 61 and the endgame begins.

It goes Normal-Nightmare-Hell-Inferno. Easy medium and hard difficulties have the same exp and drop levels, not until master difficulty is there a difference . Master 1 thru 5 increase exp and drops incrementally but not sure of exact percentages. I think master-1 is plus 120% exp and drops and master-5 is plus 200%.
