Tapping it will bring up an even larger list of nearby Pokemon. Essentially, this list is in order, with the closest Pokemon to your current location situated in the top left, and the furthest in the bottom right. Underneath these Pokemon will be tiny footprints. These signify (when it is working), roughly the distance the Pokemon is from you.

Those with one paw print underneath are the closest and nearly on top of you, two being relatively close and three meaning they’re the farthest away.
