Quite often, if the loading screens take more than a few minutes, it’s faster to restart the game (force quit with Alt+F4) and then join your friends instead of going into a random online session (provided any of your friends are online that is). Dude, it should not take 20 minutes to load GTA Online. It shouldn’t take longer than 3 minutes. If it does, quit the game and try again.
I would think load times would be associated with the hard drive being used. With that being said I have this game on a ssd and the load times are still painfully long. #4
Posted August 13, 2015 (edited) The game is trying to connect everyone. and pull off info from R* servers at the same time. Sometimes just one player with a sh*t connection to you, is enough to cause you to time out. The more players the more problems.
Each time a game of GTA Online was being loaded, so were all of these items, taking up a huge amount of CPU time. T0st fixed this issue by overwriting the need for the game to make these checks, and as a result reduced the load times by an incredible 70%.

It’s random depending on the host it selects for you to join. Rarely it is going to be really quick when the other person is near your region, probably less than a minute.
